NOTES: For Jetta and Blossom to discover the islands and meet some wild horses for the first time
@juni! and otherwise open
“Look, Jetta!”
The bay mare refocused as her daughter’s voice sliced through her thoughts. She turned to the yearling, who was excitedly bounding forward. Then, she looked where Blossom was running toward. The trees thinned up ahead and stopped short of a wide stretch of golden earth with blue sky above.
“It’s just sand,” Jetta said, confused. “You have seen it before, before we even came here. It is probably a lake or more of that desert.” Nonetheless she followed as Blossom kicked up dirt running through the trees.
As she came to the end of the trees, she realized she was incorrect. While it was a shoreline one could mistake for a lake, the smell in the air told her otherwise. Salt wind filled her lungs, riding the waves toward the land. In the distance, she saw a few distinct land masses jutting from the water.
“Water!” Blossom yelled as she bounded toward the edge of the ocean.
“Do not drink it,” Jetta yelled after her. “It will make you sick and dehydrated.”
Her words fell on deaf ears as the filly bent down to touch the water. It was quickly followed by disgusted noises as Blossom reared back and spat the saltwater from her mouth. Jetta sighed and shook her head.
As the older mare came out of the shade of the trees, she took in the coast properly. Cliffs rose up from the water, stretching on either side of them to the east and west. Above their heads, the sharp outlines of hunting birds darted through the sky. Her daughter had quickly recovered from the ocean taste-test, and now rolled in the warm sand. Her skinny, knobby legs kicked the air happily as Blossom scratched her back.
Jetta’s worry, which had been constant since they escaped the farm, slowly dissipated and she trotted along the beach with her head high. She did not let her guard down even here, though. She had yet to encounter the wild horses of this land.
what a curious place the mainland was. the blood of the islands that coursed through her kept her moving for peregrine, wanting nothing more than to leap into it’s comforting embrace. alas, she knew her time here was not over, and settled on watching over the waves instead. with fia tucked away and on the mend, asami was left to finally rest. the spider tucked herself in the sand, against the trees and away from the sun, letting sleep find her after what felt like the longest few days of her life.
she wasn’t sure how long had passed when the sound of hoof beats and laughter startled her. lupine eyes fluttered open, scanning the beach to no avail, until two figures appeared shortly after. at first glance, asami was uncertain of what these two wanted, but it didn’t take long to see the mother daughter pair were simply seeking the same kind of solace as she. as much as she wanted to lay herself back down, the amazement on the fillies face got the better of her. the lithe mare, with a quiet heave, got back unto all fours and shook out her body free of the sand that stuck to her.
asami watched as the young one attempted to drink from the oceans ire. a small chuckle erupted from her, head shaking at the mere thought of such a salty treat. coming back to and catching the elder mares words, asami finally made herself known to them, a smile on her weathered face. “fret not. a little salt water never hurt anybody,” she quipped, her tone uplifting against the tiredness she wore. “truth be told, saltwater has its uses. medicinal, mostly - have you never seen the ocean, young blood?”
Jetta sharply turned her head toward the new presence. The black and white mare made her step back in surprise. In an instant, she was on edge again. She had half a mind not to tell Blossom not to answer the stranger’s question, but already the filly was up on her feet and walking toward her.
“No, never,” Blossom replied. “What do you use saltwater for? It tastes something awful.” She stuck her tongue out in disgust remembering the taste of the water.
The bay mare approached as well, making an effort to put herself between the strange horse and her daughter. She nosed Blossom back to her side and turned to block her from view. The yearling’s protests were ignored as Jetta turned back to the other horse.
“Who are you? Are you a wild horse?” Her question came out accusatory and harsh, though her voice trembled a little.
As though the thought just occurred to her at that moment, Blossom ducked under Jetta’s head and excitedly began to ask, “Are you really a wild horse? Do you live here? If you live on the beach, do you have to eat fish?” Jetta sighed and shook her head as the filly rattled off her rapid-fire questions. She looked to Asami with an apologetic expression, some of her fear now forgotten.
